Green Hack: reducing waste

Buy loose produce instead of pre-packaged bulk bags

Why buy loose produce instead of bulk in plastic bags?

Although many people do not have the luxury of buying loose fruit and vegetables which may be more expensive, if you are able to, avoiding plastic packaging by purchasing loose produce can drastically reduce your single-use plastic consumption.

Opting for supermarkets or greengrocers that sell unpackaged produce also signals to sellers that plastic packaging is a priority for their customers.

However, in many cases plastic packaging can increase the shelf life of certain fruits and vegetables, so it is important to store produce correctly to ensure it lasts. This might involve using your own tupperware or simply keeping produce under the right conditions, eg. in a refrigerator or in the dark.
