Green Hack: reducing waste

Instead of asking for presents, fundraise for a charity for your birthday or a cultural celebration

Why fundraise instead of receiving gifts?

Although the sentiment of gifts is nice, many people receive gifts they do not need or particularly want for birthdays or religious/cultural holidays. These increase consumption of unnecessary goods and buy into a habit of consumerism. Unless there is a specific item you desire, you may consider setting up a fundraiser or asking people to donate to a charity of choice on your behalf.

Not only does this reduce unnecessary consumption and waste, it can raise vital funds for non-profits that make a difference to people and the environment.

You might also consider letting friends and family know that you don't want to receive certain items or gifts beyond a certain list of things - if you frame this within an environmental context, others are likely to understand and may be inspired to reply with a similar message!
